Another important aspect of burn prevention through education is our pioneering work in Russia.
Over the past 17 years we have supported various burns units in Russia, the 2 main ones being at the Speransky, Hospital No9, Moscow and at Hospital No1, St Petersburg. Others include the burns units in Rostov on Don and smaller burns units in the surrounding areas of St Petersburg. We hope to expand our support to more units across Russia.
Our support has varied from helping the Speransky Children's Hospital No9 in Moscow which is Russia's main paediatric burn referral hospital and which, at the time after the terrorist attack on the school in Beslan, received the more serious burn and trauma victims from the atrocity in Beslan, Ossetia. We, along with the support of our Royal Patron, HRH Prince Michael of Kent GCVO, organised an Appeal to support the hospital in its efforts to cope with the overwhelming number of critically ill patients which arrived at its door.
We were one of the main co-ordinating charities here in the UK for this Appeal and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who was able to contribute either financially or in kind to support these children and their families. In the last few years, we have supported a number of burns units in Russia more and more with medical supplies and equipment.
Through our programme with Prince Michael of Kent's Foundation we hope to provide more medical supplies, varying from special bandages to pressure garments, scalpels and smaller pieces of medical equipment to various paediatric burns units across Russia. In September 2008, HRH Prince Michael of Kent visited the burns unit, which is run by Dr Marina Brazol, at Hospital No1 in St Petersburg on behalf of and in his capacity as our Patron.
We continue our efforts in Russia and are very grateful to our Patron HRH Prince Michael of Kent GCVO for his ongoing support. We would also like to thank everyone who over the last 17 years has helped with our work in Russia whether financially or in kind.
