Often children with severe burns are admitted to specialist burns centres in hospitals far from their home – sometimes over 100 miles away. Parents coping with the trauma of a seriously ill child and trying to juggle travel, childminding siblings and their jobs can find mounting expenses a serious problem. Following referral from the relevant clinical burns specialists we have helped several families throughout the UK to cope with these initial costs.
A burn injury is for life, the scars are physical as well as psychological and are a life sentence. Children can encounter problems at school and again, following referral from specialists, we have helped with funding for therapeutic support. We are always looking at how we can increase the direct support we give to families and our next project is to look at how we can put parents who would like to talk to others whose children have suffered similar injuries in touch with each other. This is a new initiative and is still in the planning stage, however, it is possible to register with www.makingcontact.org/
If you have any specific questions that we may be able to help you with please contact us.
"I searched for ages to find someone with the same condition as my son. When I found someone through MakingContact.org who knew what I was going through - I was so happy, I cried."
